The department says it is not in a position to upgrade, manage and maintain vehicle access to Taronui Bay.
So, if we want to shorten the long 3.7km walk to Taronui by providing for public vehicle access - at least some of the way - it seems we will need to step up as a community.
We will need to raise funds to upgrade and realign the road to fit the public conservation strip. We're looking at some $500,000.
And DOC warns that entering a community partnership with the department is a big undertaking.
For a community partnership to be considered, we would need to present a full proposal and assessment that includes a long-term plan and commitment from the community that addresses DOC's concerns about speeding, 4WD vehicle abuse, dogs, fires, rubbish, toilets, respect for wahi tapu and taking of kai moana, ongoing management and longevity.
We acknowledge we'll need hapu support.
And DOC requires us to get the support of the neighbouring landowners who have recently erected a gate on conservation land to keep public vehicles out.
Is this the way to go? Do we have any options?
