A Big Win for Denver Residents as Repeal Measure Signatures are Certified by Denver Elections Division

Controversial Group Living Amendment on November 2021 Ballot

Denver - Denver Elections Division announced the sufficiency of the Safe and Sound Denver referendum petitions on June 7, 2021 confirming the Group Living Amendment will appear as a repeal measure on the November 2021 ballot.

A total of 19,292 signatures were submitted -- more than twice the number required by statute -- and a majority were deemed valid.

“This is a big win for residents of Denver," stated Florence Sebern, a member of Safe and Sound Denver. "Good governance means serving one's constituency, not pandering to failed policies."

"These failed policies have been implemented in "peer cities" Portland, Seattle and San Francisco, among others. The results beg the question: why would anyone want to replicate them in Denver," asked Sebern. "The Group Living Amendment is so much more than 'just a couple extra roommates.'"

The 200-page Group Living Zoning Code Amendment was passed by Denver City Council on February 8, 2021 by a vote of 11-2. Over 5,000 letters of opposition and 600 letters of support were contained in the public record.

“Safe and Sound Denver is grateful to be able to offer a voice and a choice to all Denver neighbors regarding housing uses in their neighborhoods. We celebrate our unique and diverse neighborhoods all across the city," commented Safe and Sound member, Paige Burkeholder. "We support the stability of our neighborhood communities, policies that support Denver’s long-term growth, quality of life and well-being."

About Safe and Sound Denver
Safe and Sound Denver originated in 2020 as a grass-roots collaboration of concerned Denver neighbors from across the city, who opposed the massive zoning code changes. We are concerned about the real impacts of increasing density in single family homes, redefining residential care to include homeless shelters in all residential neighborhoods, increasing the area where community corrections/halfway houses are allowed by 450% and removing the historic buffer zones between schools and community corrections/halfway houses, as well as parking and infrastructure stressors.
