The Issue

Fort Creek's Hub Trail, stretching from 2nd Line to 3rd Line, serves as an important artery for our community. Throughout summer, cyclists, hikers, families, and dog walkers rely on it to maintain their livelihoods, health, and happiness.

However, once snow blankets the ground, the hub trail becomes inaccessible to most users. Commuting cyclists navigating to jobs, parents looking for a snowy stroll, and dog owners out for daily exercise are left stranded. This isn't just about convenience; it's an issue of safety and community spirit.

There's no valid reason why users shouldn't have winter access. Many cities across Canada have successfully implemented trail grooming in winter, enhancing the quality of life for their residents. Grooming the trail could be a straightforward solution to ensure the path remains navigable, fostering active living despite the challenges winter may bring.

The tangible benefits of winter grooming the Fort Creek section are endless. It can lead to reduced traffic congestion and carbon emissions as more people cycle and walk to work. It also encourages outdoor play, which is crucial for the well-being of young families.

We urge the city of Sault Ste. Marie to allocate resources towards the grooming of the Fort Creek section of the Hub Trail during the winter. Let’s keep this vital community resource accessible and safe for all its users year-round.
