The Issue

When my beloved chihuahua was just 10 years old, he went in for hes yearly check up with the vet,  he appeared fine. no one suggested advanced diagnostic scans to check for any possible future problems.  Unfortunately, at the age of 12, we had to put him down due to undetected cancer. I am heartbroken, realizing that his life could have been prolonged had we been informed earlier of the need for more intensive checks. This devastating experience has made me aware of a gap in veterinary care that affects countless pet owners and their companion animals.

Veterinary care is essential for maintaining our pets' quality of life, especially as they age. Many pet owners may not realize that certain breeds are predisposed to specific health issues. Veterinarians have the knowledge and tools to proactively identify potential health concerns through advanced diagnostic scans and screenings. Unfortunately, these options are often not communicated effectively to pet owners until it's too late.

According to the Veterinary Medical Association, nearly 45% of households in the U.K  own a pet, and for most, they are considered part of the family. However, an alarming number of pets face preventable conditions as they age, simply because they didn't receive comprehensive evaluations. Early detection through advanced imaging, like ultrasounds or MRI scans, could significantly increase the chances of effective treatment and improve longevity.

We're calling on veterinary professionals to adopt a more proactive approach toward elder pet care. This includes:

- Regularly educating pet owners about breed-specific health risks as their pets age
- Recommending advanced scans and diagnostic tests for senior pets
- Developing a standardized care plan for elderly animals
- Implementing reminder systems for critical health check-ups

By integrating these practices, vets can help ensure that pets receive the best possible care throughout their lives. While these measures might entail additional costs, they can ultimately prevent more substantial, subsequent expenses related to emergency treatment for advanced conditions.

Let us forge a path towards proactive healthcare for our aging pets, empowering owners to make informed decisions and give their beloved animals longer, healthier lives. Please sign this petition to urge veterinary clinics and professionals to enhance their services and communication strategies, ensuring all pets receive the life-extending care they deserve.
