The Issue
We, South Sudanese citizens, members of the diaspora, faith leaders, and human rights advocates, are deeply concerned about the escalating situation in South Sudan. For too long, our people have suffered the consequences of ethnic violence and political instability. We have consistently faced threats to our lives, security, and basic human rights. It is heartbreaking to witness our homeland, rich in culture and potential, being plagued by conflict and suffering.
The warning signs of mass atrocities are evident, with recent upsurges in violence threatening the safety of millions. According to the United Nations and international observers, systemic violations are rampant, including targeted ethnic killings, sexual violence, and the displacement of communities. The world cannot turn a blind eye to this humanitarian crisis threatening to spiral out of control.
We call upon the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Union Peace & Security Council, IGAD, UNMISS, the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, and all concerned governments and international partners, to act decisively and immediately. We urge these bodies to implement comprehensive protective measures, such as enhancing peacekeeping forces' mandate to include civilian protection, facilitating diplomatic dialogue among all parties, and imposing targeted sanctions on those perpetrating violence.
Moreover, accountability must be reinforced. The pathways to justice, including international legal mechanisms, must be activated to ensure that those responsible for atrocities face consequences. This is essential for deterring future violations and restoring hope for a peaceful and stable South Sudan.
We cannot overstate the urgency of this matter. Immediate international intervention and accountability are imperative to prevent further tragedies. By signing this petition, you stand with us in urging effective action and justice for the people of South Sudan. Please join us in calling for an end to the cycle of violence and disregard for human life. Your signature can help amplify our collective voice in demanding justice and safety for all South Sudanese.
