Demand transparency on the closure of Stratford Park Lido

Demand transparency on the closure of Stratford Park Lido
The Issue
Over 2,000 people have now signed this petition to call for urgent action on the future of Stratford Park Lido.
Growing up in Stroud, the Stratford Park Lido has been far more than just a place to swim—it has been a cornerstone of our community. Generations have learned to swim there, built friendships, and created lasting memories. For many, it is also vital for physical health, mental wellbeing, and local sporting activity.
The sudden closure of this much-loved, Grade II listed facility by Stroud District Council has left residents shocked, frustrated, and deeply concerned. The Lido was open and in use last year. Its rapid decline raises serious questions about maintenance, oversight, and long-term planning.
We are calling on Stroud District Council to:
• Publish the full, independent condition survey of the Lido
• Provide a clear and detailed breakdown of all projected repair costs
• Explain what maintenance was carried out in recent years, and where failures may have occurred
• Commit to exploring all viable options to restore and reopen the Lido
• Engage openly with the community before any permanent decisions are made
This is not just a leisure facility—it is a historic public asset and a vital part of Stroud’s identity. The loss of the Lido has already had a significant impact on swimmers, families, and those who rely on it for health and wellbeing.
As the Lido approaches its 90th year, we urge the council to be transparent, accountable, and proactive in securing its future.
We ask the council to set out a clear pathway to reopening, rather than allowing further decline.
Just last week, SDC stated £5 million was needed for redevelopment. Now, they claim the same £5 million is required just for repairs. Residents deserve a clear explanation for this sudden and significant change
What oversight did the council exercise over the operator, and were maintenance responsibilities properly fulfilled?”
If the facility was operated by a third party, what safeguards were in place to protect a listed public asset
