Demand Transparency in Charitable Donations for Wildfire Relief and Their Allocation

Demand Transparency in Charitable Donations for Wildfire Relief and Their Allocation
The Issue
Recent wildfires in LA County have left many residents of LA and surrounding areas in need of substantial aid - aid which we are often encouraged to provide through donations to large charities and enterprise entities. However, there is a concern voiced deeply by us, the constituents. Where is that money going? We demand the public disclosure of all monetary donations made to charities, non-profits, or any other organizations or entities and how these donations are allocated for the benefit of those in need.
Indeed, the scale of devastation brought about by the fires introduces a risk potential for misuse of funds, even unknowingly so, when dangerous discretion becomes an opaque blanket. This scenario could breed exploitation, overpaying some while those in dire need are left wanting.
According to data from Charity Navigator, a leading evaluator of charities in the United States, as much as $2.5 billion may be misused on an annual basis due to fraudulent activities within charities (Charity Navigator, 2019). Given a disaster that is of such catastrophic proportions, there is a need more than ever for mechanisms ensuring that every single cent is used to rebuild lives and not to line the pockets of the wealthy.
By making public all monetary donations and their allocations, we will not only ensure financial accountability but also instil confidence among donors and the affected that their aid is being channeled appropriately.
Stand with us in promoting transparency, accountability and community rebuilding in the wake of the LA wildfires. Demand our government makes public all monetary donations made to charities, non-profits, or any other organizations or entities along with their allocation. Sign the petition today.
