Residents of Charles County, Maryland, deserve clarity and assurance concerning expected actions of local law enforcement and their stance regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities. National events have raised major concerns, and fear, about how communities are being affected by law enforcement's cooperation with ICE. It's crucial to understand whether our Sheriff's Office prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of our community members, or if it is more aligned with the objectives of ICE. As the representative to our protectors, Sheriff Troy Berry must clearly communicate his position, and the actions he will direct our officers to undertake, in relation to ICE. Is he committed to safeguarding our community, or is he focused on supporting federal immigration initiatives at the potential expense of local residents' trust and safety? Activists, local leaders, and concerned citizens expect straightforward, transparent communication from the CCSO, as this is paramount for ensuring the safety of everyone in Charles County. By signing this petition, we are demanding the Sheriff of Charles County, Troy Berry, provide a public statement detailing policies as it pertains to interactions of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office with ICE. This statement must explain the extent of cooperation, or noncooperation, including specific roles deputies may assume in ICE operations, and how those roles will impact citizen response to ICE in our communities. We do expect this statement to reflect the community's priorities over federal enforcement tactics.  Sheriff Berry, will you direct our officers to protect the residents in Charles County – a majority minority county, classified in March 2025 as a sanctuary county by DHS – from ICE? Or, will you direct our officers to protect ICE, risking the safety of our communities?
