The Issue

On September 22, 2026, 33-year-old Eric Hernandez tragically lost his life following an encounter with law enforcement that began near the Fastrip store in Lindsay, California. His sudden passing has left his family, loved ones, and our community devastated, struggling for peace and clarity in the wake of his death. Weeks have slipped by, and yet, we find ourselves still in the dark, desperately searching for basic answers about what truly transpired during his time in custody.

This petition is a call to the Lindsay City Council, City Manager, Lindsay Police Department, Tulare County Sheriff’s Office, Board of Supervisors, and the Tulare County District Attorney's Office to demand full transparency and release the body camera footage from the officers involved in the incident. The delay and lack of information not only prolong the agony of Eric's family but also erode our community's trust in those sworn to protect and serve us.

Every family and community deserves the complete truth, fairness, and transparency when a life is lost in law enforcement custody. If we cannot rely on the systems in place to provide us with accountability and transparency, how are we to trust them? Without these fundamental assurances, our faith in these institutions remains fractured.

We propose the following actionable steps to be taken immediately:

1. Promptly release all body camera footage and police records related to the incident involving Eric Hernandez. This is vital not only for the sake of transparency but also for fostering public trust and healing.

2. Implement a policy where body camera footage is automatically released to the public within a specific timeframe following any incident involving serious injury or death. This will ensure timely and fair access to vital information.

3. Establish an independent review board with representatives from the community to oversee incidents of this nature, ensuring unbiased evaluations and recommendations.

Let us remember, accountability is not an option but a requirement. Our community is entitled to clarity and the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. We owe it to Eric, his family, and future generations to insist on justice and transparency.

By signing this petition, you advocate for justice, accountability, and a community where trust is restored, where families do not have to live in the shadow of unanswered questions, and where truth prevails. Please join us in demanding these changes today. Sign and share this petition to ensure Eric Hernandez did not lose his life in vain, and that this tragedy can lead to meaningful reform.
