The Issue

Hello everyone! I need your help getting more visibility on an issue that impacts many of us and our cost of living. Thank you, in advance!

This post was last updated 2/2/2026.

I've added the interpretation and problem with HJR-173 & 174 through my and many other Missourians' perspectives. Please add in the comments or in my inbox any concerns you may have. I'll do my best to include that as well. ☺️

The Problem:

Our state government is pushing for HJR-173 & 174, which will eventually eliminate or severely decrease income taxes. Sure it sounds amazing, however, the ones who proposed them in the first place aren't being totally transparent on why they're trying to push these bills, how these bills will impact the state of Missouri, and what the implications of enacting these bills will be for ALL Missouri residents (both directly and indirectly). Especially middle and low income earners. This affects more than 3/4 of Missourians!

These bills, while allowing us to have less or no income taxes, will heavily increase our cost of living. This includes sales taxes, services taxes, property taxes, etc. Think of all of your groceries, your Amazon shipments, your monthly expenses, etc. I can't help but wonder how this will impact our utility bills, electricity and gas bills, mailing services (costs for mailing anything these days has definitely increased as is), and whether this will impact gas ⛽ prices at the pump among many other things. We have quite a bit through the state of Missouri that have gone untaxed without full awareness and clarity that could go up for discussion.

They're also wanting to leave the amount of taxes that go to schools untouched. What if there are other avenues we can try to fund revenue for schools that can actually INCREASE what schools are getting WITHOUT hiking up or completely eliminating our income taxes in such a way? With these proposed bills impacting so many people and families I think they could have absolutely done more to bring awareness to the meetings that were held regarding them and the appropriate wording to help people understand them too.

The Petition:

Missouri citizens deserve a transparent government that respects the will of the people. However, Missouri House Joint Resolution 173 and 174 (HJR-173 & HJR-174) pose a threat to this fundamental democratic principle. These resolutions, currently under consideration, could have significant implications for the rights and lives of Missouri residents, yet there has not been sufficient public discourse or transparency about its contents and potential impact.

HJR-173 &174, if passed, could alter vital aspects of our state’s legislative processes and increase the cost of living for many Missourians. However, without exhaustive public discussions, informed debates, and clarity about its motives and outcomes, these resolutions stand as a looming risk against our democratic processes. Every citizen in Missouri has the right to understand exactly what changes are being proposed and have a say in how they will impact our state.

The call for transparency is not just about openness; it’s about ensuring that those in power are held accountable. Decisions affecting the public should be made with the public's full knowledge and participation. Keeping secretive or inadequately communicated about potential changes undermines the notion of a government that is truly "by the people, for the people."

We, as concerned citizens, demand that our state legislators hold comprehensive discussions and provide clear, accessible information to all voters about HJR-173 & 174. Further, we urge that all measures within this resolution be thoroughly reviewed and debated to consider their potential impacts on Missouri’s citizens. We also demand the removal of this resolution if it continues to pose a threat without adequate transparency and justification.

Join us in demanding that the Missouri General Assembly prioritize the principles of democracy and transparency. Sign our petition to halt and remove Missouri HJR-173 & 174 until it is properly evaluated in public forums and full disclosure is provided. Together, let’s protect the rights and voices of Missouri’s citizens. Your signature matters.
