Thank you for helping me in my quest to #FindHero
Thank you to everyone who has signed so far. It is really encouraging that so many of you feel like I do, namely that (morally) Hero belongs with her (former) family.
I fully accept that legally a police dog belongs to the police and not to the police officer they are assigned to but I doubt that’s how Pearl or Hero saw things. I believe that Pearl felt she was part of the Wardell family and that she felt very much loved. I have no doubt that Hero feels exactly the same. I am certain that both Pearl and Hero were deeply shocked at being separated so dramatically and that they would not have understood why they were taken away.
The fact that PD Pearl was taken ill with cancer and thus retired from service and subsequently died, without being reunited with Dave is heart-breaking. I consider that to be a wrong that needs to be morally put right via a better outcome happening for Hero.
I am a realist but I am willing to ‘dare to dream’ that this might happen, hence this petition which will be presented to the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire Police, under cover of a polite and respectful letter.
Firstly, I want to find out whether Hero is alive (unlike Pearl) and that she is well and healthy.
Then, I want to find out if she has retired already or whether she is close to retirement.
Naturally, I realise that this information might not be something that I am entitled to know but I hope that the answers will be forthcoming nonetheless, perhaps to Dave rather than to me.
Once we know if Hero is alive and well, then it would be wonderful if discussions could take place about whether Hero could be reunited with Dave in her retirement.
As I say, I realise that Hero is ‘police property’ until she retires but sometimes situations happen that require things to be looked at from a moral standpoint rather than merely from a legal one.
I hope that this can have a happy ending to put right the wrong that has happened.
