The Issue

Hundreds of our neighbors and family members are being held in the Otay Mesa Detention Facility in San Diego. They have become like hostages to circumstances that are often beyond their control. What compounds this injustice is the lack of transparency regarding their wellbeing, particularly for those with medical needs.

Many detainees are expressing to their loved ones that they are not receiving the medical treatment they urgently require. Access to adequate healthcare isn’t just a moral obligation; it is a basic human right. Yet, reports indicate that detainees are suffering, and their cries for help are going unheard. This isn't just a problem for those directly impacted—it's an issue that impacts our entire community's integrity and humanity.

The Otay Mesa Detention Facility must be more transparent about the medical care available and provided to detainees. Additionally, living conditions should be improved to meet humane standards. This includes ensuring that detainees have access to adequate food, water, sanitation, and exercise, which are all fundamental needs that respect their human dignity.

We call upon facility administrators, the Department of Homeland Security, and other relevant authorities to implement measures that ensure all detainees receive proper medical care, and that living conditions are elevated to humane standards immediately. Let us not turn our backs on those who are trapped within this flawed system.

Join me in demanding justice and humanity for those at the Otay Mesa Detention Facility. Sign this petition to stand up for the rights of our neighbors and family members. Together, we can hold the systems accountable and push for necessary changes.
