Demand Transparency and a Formal Apology for the Treatment of Valeriy Angelopol
The Issue
The Story:
For nearly a 3 years, the public has been told a story about the August 2023 split of ice dance partners Vasilisa Kaganovskaya and Valeriy Angelopol.
The narrative framed the breakup as a sudden, shocking ultimatum delivered unilaterally by Valeriy.
However, a closer look at the timeline and documentation reveals a different story—one of managed narratives, selective leaks, and professional isolation.
The Facts:
The 23-Day Timeline:
The document in question was initiated by coach Anjelika Krylova from Svetlana Angelopol on August 8, 2023. Yet, the public was not informed of this until August 30, 2023—a 23-day gap during which the situation was handled behind the scenes.
Bilateral Accountability:
The contract was not a one-sided demand, but a bilateral disciplinary agreement designed to hold both partners to the same training standards, the contract had 2 side to it. If both skaters didn’t cooperate each would get identical consequences.
But for Vasilisa’s own reasons she left it out
Don’t you think it’s almost to convenient that Vasilisa left Valeriys side out?
Selective Disclosure:
When the contract was leaked, only the page regarding consequences for Vasilisa was shared with the public.
This was done to frame Valeriy as the “one responsible” and shield the coaching staff from questions regarding the management of their team.
Professional Impact:
Following the split, Valeriy faced unprecedented difficulty in securing new coaching or training, leading to widespread concern that he was being blacklisted by the skating establishment.
After the split many of Valeriys fans turned on him, threatened him, reports tell us he didn’t leave the house for weeks for fear of his safety.
Have you any idea what that can do to a person?
Valeriy has shown resilience far greater then any I’ve ever seen in someone in his position
The skating community deserves the truth. We believe that the narrative presented to the public was orchestrated to protect specific reputations at the expense of Valeriy Angelopol’s professional career and the Angelopol family's well-being.
We, the undersigned, call for:
A formal apology from the relevant parties to the Angelopol family for the damaging narrative and professional harm caused by the events surrounding the 2023 split.
Increased transparency from the Federation regarding the handling of disputes within professional training groups.
It is time to look past the "shock" headlines and acknowledge the reality of the situation. We ask you to join us in standing for fairness, accountability, and the truth.
I therefore ask that The Russian Figure Skating Federation (FFKKR), Anjelika Krylova, and Vasilisa Kaganovskaya
publicly apologise to Valeriy Angelopol
