The evacuation of tens of thousands of people trapped in Mariupol is only possible with the help of the UN. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Iryna Vereshchuk in her commentary to the BBC on April 22, 2022.

Iryna Vereshchuk stated that the UN should participate in organizing evacuation passages from the blocked city, adding that it is "the only organization that can and has the power to prevent many deaths." However, it looks like for now the international organization is "only watching the events," Vereshchuk added. “We don't have time to wait. These corridors should be created in the upcoming days,” the Deputy Prime Minister said, as Ukrainians who are left behind, are starving and being deprived of water and essential medical care as they are being bombed. 

The UN should start helping the Ukrainian government in organizing safe corridors for populations that are left in this city's debris as soon as possible. 

We demand that the Security Council of the UN whose purpose is to maintain international peace and security as well as achieve international cooperation, live up to their name and act IMMEDIATELY in order to save as many lives as possible from cruel and unnecessary deaths.
