I belong to the Asian American community in Oklahoma City and we stand against the brutality inflicted upon one of our members - a 71-year-old man, by a local police officer. This unprovoked aggression is part of an escalating pattern of violence that is getting out of hand. The incident not only put his life in danger, but it also triggered a wave of fear within our community and highlighted a broader issue of race-based violence.

In 2019, Asian Americans were a target of 4.4% of single-bias hate crime incidents, and in a year that number has risen significantly (source: FBI). Now, with this recent incident, it's crucial to address the risk of a growing trend of racial violence in our society. We urge our local law enforcement and representatives to establish a robust system of checks to prevent such instances, starting by holding the concerned officer accountable.

Our community urges the Oklahoma City Police Department to terminate this officer immediately, setting a precedent-setting gesture that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be overlooked.
