I assert that Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, killed Doretha Hope Pringle or, more affectionately, Mama on September 3, 2021, at 9:54 pm. Afterward, Emerson Hospital conspired to cover up what happened during the endoscopy/IR procedure, willfully withheld pertinent medical information, and put up a wall of silence to prevent me from discovering the truth about Mama’s death. I assert that at least six doctors and one CCU nurse participated in the cover-up. Even the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) doctor, who consulted in the Emergency Department, refused to cross Emerson Hospital’s wall of silence and help me.

I begged Emerson Hospital CEO Christine Schuster and the senior leadership team to tell me what happened in the operating room, to no avail. Therefore, I started my investigation. I spent nights, early mornings, and weekends pouring over Mama’s medical records, which I had to request four times due to missing records. I finally found the secret Emerson Hospital thought they buried forever more than a year after Mama’s death. Emerson Hospital raised Mama’s systolic blood pressure from 133 to 272, from my calculation for over 9 hours. Emerson Hospital hid this systolic blood pressure reading from me, neglected to run any imaging tests for days, and blatantly lied for days, insisting that Mama would “just wake up.”

I requested that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) investigate Mama’s death. The Massachusetts DPH refused and responded that Mama would be entered in their database and that Mama’s information would be “available for review by surveyors in preparation for future inspections and surveys at this facility.” The Department of Public Health’s response is unacceptable. 

Despite Emerson Hospital’s despicable actions, Dr. Robbie Goldstein, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, appointed by Governor Maura Healey, and Kate Walsh, Secretary of Health and Human Services, refused to investigate Mama’s death at Emerson Hospital. Dr. Goldstein, Kate Walsh, and Governor Healey, I demand that the Massachusetts DPH investigate Mama’s death immediately. I will not let Mama’s death be in vain.

I don’t expect doctors to be perfect, and I understand that mistakes happen. All Emerson Hospital had to do was tell the truth during the CCU family meeting or any time after that. Instead, Emerson Hospital lied.

I waited and waited and waited for Mama to get better, but Mama was never going to get better, and Emerson Hospital knew this and lied about it. If I had known that Emerson Hospital raised Mama’s systolic blood pressure to 272 for 9 hours, I would not have kept Mama on life support for so long. Emerson Hospital’s actions are beyond unprofessional and unethical; they are evil. It gets worse. Emerson Hospital’s medical director had the audacity to try to bully me to kill Mama faster or get Mama out of Emerson Hospital, while Emerson Hospital was deliberately withholding relevant medical information that I needed to make an informed decision about Mama’s care. Anyone who has made an end-of-life decision for their loved one knows it is a gut-wrenching experience. Now imagine making an end-of-life decision surrounded by corrupt doctors whose only interest is keeping their secret buried forever. It’s important to me that Emerson Hospital doesn’t put another family through this torture.

Cover-ups thrive on secrecy, whispers, and quid pro quo. I’m shining a light on Emerson Hospital’s corruption. Emerson Hospital covered up Mama’s death. It is indisputable. What happened to Mama? How many other deaths has Emerson Hospital covered up?
