Demand the Indian Government to Prohibit Sale of Water in Small Plastic Bottles
The Issue
My personal commitment and concern for this cause arises from the monumental environmental damage I continually witness in our neighborhoods. This damage is primarily because of the plastic waste produced by water bottles that are less than 500ml. Discarded irresponsibly, these bottles invade our sewers, overflow our landfills, and contribute to the alarming growth of civic mess.
This is not just an issue confined to our local context. Globally, 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute, a majority of which are less than 1 litre in volume. This statistic, provided by Euromonitor, directly paints a picture of the magnitude of plastic waste we are generating.
Plastic takes an average of 450 years to degrade, making the harm long-lasting. Microplastics from decomposing plastic bottles enter our food chain and water supplies, leading to serious health issues that we are only just beginning to understand. The World Health Organization reports that microplastics in drinking water pose a potential danger to human health.
We are pleading with the Indian Government to enact legislation that prohibits the sale of water in plastic bottles less than 500ml in volume. Such a measure will significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated, fostering cleaner and healthier communities.
We are the stewards of our environment. The change begins with each one of us demanding better regulations and contributing to responsible consumption. Please lend your voice to this cause by signing this petition, urging the Indian Government to take action now. Together, we can make a difference.
