The ionization alarm campaign met with the same apathy / non action from CPSC , UL , NFPA and alarm manufactures as it had since 1976 when this ion alarm consumer fraud was exposed. The Attorney Generals did nothing as well to force these companies and agencies to recall these dangerous alarms. Even after the new UL 217 smoldering smoke test finally went into effect on June 2024 after over 50 years of rigging the smoldering smoke test so the ion alarms could be sold without a warning label, manufactures were still allowed to sell their inventory of ion alarms placing people lives at risk for another 10 years. That said after the 8 year effort I made along with the other Fire Chiefs , Fire Protection Engineers and parents who lost children due to smoke inhalation who for years before me tried to bring a ban and recall of the ion alarms, the new UL 217 smoldering test was all that this corrupt system would allow to avoid an onslaught of legal action most likely.
I have changed name of website to www.wildfiresafehomes.org and still have a smoke alarms page to continue to create awareness about the dangers of ion alarms and am now campaigning for mandatory legislation for homes in wildfire risk areas.
For your family and friends safety sake especially those living in wildfire risk areas see Proposed legislation page which I believe makes a strong case for mandatory exterior sprinklers, home hardening and defensible landscaping that should be funded by FEMA all things considered. It is only a matter of time more communities will be destroyed unless this legislation is passed as soon as possible.
