Starting at 1:35 mark of video both ionization stand alone alarms activated in 45 seconds vs photoelectric at 4:30 and 5:19 minutes in flaming fire test which obviously shows the need for a dual sensor or both photoelectric and heat stand alone alarms. However the photo / ion combo did not go off in the flaming fire test which was a complete failure of the ionization sensor for the combo alarm it would seem likely due to combining those two type of sensors .
At 2:00 mark it shows for the smoldering smoke test the stand alone photoelectric alarms activated at 12:15 and 13:33 when smoke was still light and visibility not an issue and smoke inhalation not a danger. The combo photo / ion alarms however did not activate till 22:15 minutes and 49:20 when smoke was much thicker and a danger to people sleeping and the stand alone ionization alarms did not active at all. About 90% of homes have ionization stand alone alarms as they are less expensive and have been sold without a warning label for 50 years. After many lawsuits and one about 15 years ago that included the UL for not disclosing the dangers having approved ionization alarms using a faulty test standard, the manufactures started to recommend. " use both photoelectric and ionization alarms for best protection" on the back of packaging in small print but as this video shows and the petition clearly reveals this is a lie. The UL, NFPA and CPSC all started making this same false claim on their websites and do not even mention that there are heat sensors which are far more reliable with far fewer nuisance alarms. You will not find a photo / heat alarm in major retailers such as Home Depot , Lowes and Walmart because the manufactures do not distribute those because the profit margins are far more for the cheaper to make ionization alarms.
That said our family has an ADT home security system with monitored combo photo / heat alarms and the one in kitchen is 12 ft away from stove. Years ago it went off from medium smoke within a minute due to over cooking and the fire department was here within 5 minutes because there was no answer when ADT called us to see if it was a nuisance alarm because the installer entered one digit off when he entered phone #. Most all home security companies only install either Photo / heat combo alarms ( rate of rise technology ) but some of the DYI systems you order online only provide a photoelectric stand alone alarms I noticed. They do not sell ionization alarm technology due to the fact ionization alarms activate in kitchen so often even in very light smoke that it would flood their monitoring stations morning noon and night when people cook. Also they are aware of the lawsuits filed against the manufactures like Kidde and First Alert for selling ion alarms that do not activate in time and often do not activate at all for safe evacuation resulting in many smoke inhalation deaths and burn / lung injuries. In fact ADT went on a $3 million ad campaign promoting the use of photoelectric alarms in 1977 a year after the ionization consumer fraud was exposed.
