The current Transport for London (TFL) policy towards Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges unfairly penalizes unaware drivers. This fails to promote user awareness and penalizes innocent drivers. Currently, drivers can pay ULEZ charges by midnight on the third day following the journey or up to 90 days in advance. However, those who inadvertently enter a ULEZ zone are instantly charged with no reminder or warning given. We believe this practice is biased and contravenes the principles of fairness. Evidence shows that motorists are at a disadvantage due to the lack of reminders, leading to countless unwarranted penalties (Road Users Alliance, 2020). To promote fairness and increase awareness, we propose that TFL should follow the same timeframe either side, just as with post-travel payments. This would mean sending reminders to drivers who have entered a ULEZ zone, rather than applying instant charges. By doing so, TFL would be promoting responsible motoring, support environmental objectives, and uphold fair play.
