Demand stronger safeguards in India's animal experimentation rules, 2026
The Issue
The Government of India has published the Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 2026.
These proposed rules raise important questions about:
- animal welfare
- independent oversight of experiments and
- the standards required of facilities that house animals used in research.
Any changes to the framework that regulates animal safety must ensure that animals are protected from unnecessary suffering and that decisions involving their use are subject to appropriate scrutiny.
🍀
Therefore, we urge the Government of India to review the proposed rules carefully and:
- strengthen independent oversight,
- ensure suitable and inspected facilities, and
- consult animal-welfare organisations and relevant experts before finalising them.
Let's make laboratory experimentation regulation transparent, safe, enforceable and stronger for animals.
