Demand Stricter Safety Standards in Cosmetic Surgery

The Issue

Cosmetic surgery is real surgery. It carries real risks.

A March 2026 investigation by KFF Health News and NBC News highlighted serious injuries and deaths linked to cosmetic surgery chains and exposed gaps in oversight and transparency.

At the same time, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reminded the public that complications are never zero and urged patients to “do their homework.”

But patients cannot protect themselves if safety standards are inconsistent, enforcement is weak, and key information is difficult to access.

Americans are spending thousands — sometimes tens of thousands — of dollars on elective procedures like liposuction, Brazilian butt lifts, and “mommy makeovers.” These are major medical interventions that require strong, enforceable protections.

We call on Congress and state lawmakers to establish stricter safety standards for cosmetic surgery facilities, physician qualifications, and post-surgical recovery centers.

Patients deserve clear oversight, transparent reporting of serious complications, and consistent quality requirements nationwide.

Elective does not mean risk-free.

Safety must come first.
