Demand Stricter Penalties for Violent Crime Offenders

The Issue

I am personally affected by this matter as my brother, Jason John Brown, was violently murdered nearly six years ago. Despite five arrests and a prolonged investigation, justice has not been served. One assailant, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter, was sentenced for a mere eight years—almost as long my brother has been stolen from our lives. This individual, still in the prime of his life upon release, refuses to disclose the harrowing details of our brother's demise. Such mild punishments do not hold these individuals accountable, and this lack of ramifications challenges the values of our justice system.

Studies indicate that increasing the severity of a penalty does not necessarily deter crime, suggesting our focus should be on certainty of punishment rather than the harshness (source: National Research Council, 2014). However, when violent offenders are handed lenient sentences, it undermines the principles of fairness and justice. It means that the violent offenders aren't held fully accountable for their actions and the suffering caused to their victims' families.

My aim in this petition isn't merely to increase sentences but to push for a more comprehensive judicial approach which includes stronger sentences for particularly severe cases like my brother Jason's. The goal is to create a system where punishment aligns with the criminal act, fostering a sense of justice for victims and their grieving families.

Remember the pain you felt hearing Jason's story. Today, together we can make a difference. Help me deliver this powerful message to our legislators: violent crime offenders must be subjected to stricter penalties. Please sign this petition. #JusticeForJasonJohnBrown
