Demand South African Embassy and Swiss Authorities Tackle Racial Behaviour

The Issue

This petition addresses a deeply troubling incident that occurred over the weekend of 7–8 December 2024 in a WhatsApp group for South Africans living in Switzerland. A Black South African member was subjected to a vile racial slur (“ka***” – a dehumanising term historically used by white South Africans towards Black South Africans) by a New Zealand national. When this overt racism was called out, the victim was further attacked and demeaned by some White South Africans in the group who defended the perpetrator’s behaviour. Shockingly, one of these perpetrators remains an active member of the group.

When we demanded accountability from the group administrators, including the expulsion of the offending member, we were met with hostility. Instead of addressing the racist behaviour, the administrators and some members dismissed our concerns, insulted us, accused us of having “black privilege,” labeled us as “racists,” and silenced us by either removing us from the group or creating an environment so hostile that we felt compelled to leave. The perpetrator, meanwhile, faced no accountability and continued to be shielded by their defenders.

This incident is not an isolated event. It highlights systemic issues of racism within diaspora communities, where Black South Africans are frequently subjected to discrimination, often by White South Africans who refuse to confront their historical and ongoing complicity in racial inequities. When we speak out, we are gaslit, silenced, or ostracised, leaving us feeling unsafe, unheard, and unwelcome.

As Black South Africans, we have witnessed the devastating effects of racism on our communities. These experiences fuel our determination to demand change and advocate for a world where every individual, regardless of race or background, is treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

Today, we call attention to a pressing issue: the ongoing perpetuation of racist behaviour and derogatory language toward Black South Africans by White South Africans in Switzerland. Alarmingly, such behaviour extends beyond interpersonal racism; it even involves teaching others from different nationalities to disrespect and devalue Black South Africans in the diaspora.

Racism is a menace to society.
Hate crimes and discrimination, rooted in systemic racism, harm not only their immediate victims but also the broader values of unity and humanity. For example, hate crimes in South Africa increased by 66% between 2018 and 2019 (Statistics South Africa, 2020), highlighting the pervasive nature of such injustices. This reality undermines the principles of Ubuntu—a philosophy that celebrates our shared humanity and interconnectedness.

We therefore urge the South African Embassy in Switzerland, along with Swiss authorities, to take a decisive stand against racism. A zero-tolerance approach is essential to address these injustices and foster a safe, inclusive environment for all South Africans abroad.

Purpose of This Petition:

  1. Raise Awareness: This petition seeks to bring to the Embassy’s and Swiss authorities’ attention the specific incident described above and the broader patterns of racism faced by Black South Africans in the diaspora. These actions not only cause harm but also undermine the principles of equality and unity that South Africa stands for.
  2. Mitigate Reputational Risks: Failing to address incidents like this undermines South Africa’s global image as a nation committed to reconciliation and equality. Diplomatically, this could jeopardise the country’s foreign policy objectives and reputation.

Our Demands:

  1.  Accountability for Perpetrators:
  • The individuals involved must face appropriate consequences for their actions in accordance with clear standards of conduct.
  • Perpetrators should participate in anti-racism education, issue apologies, and commit to fostering awareness about racism among their peers.

     2. Support and Resources for Victims:

  • The Embassy should provide resources for Black South Africans affected by racism, including a safe and effective reporting mechanism for incidents of discrimination.

     3.  Diplomatic Action:

  •  Engage local authorities to address this issue at the community level.
  • Issue public statements condemning racism and affirming the values of dignity and equality for all South Africans.
  • Educate South Africans abroad on the importance of cultural sensitivity and appropriate behavior in their host countries.

Why This Matters:

This incident and others like it stem from a refusal by many White South Africans to confront their historical and ongoing roles in perpetuating systemic racism. Their unwillingness to take responsibility for these injustices undermines the spirit of reconciliation and progress that South Africa’s democracy seeks to achieve.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a call for justice, accountability, and systemic change. Your voice will amplify the perspectives of marginalised individuals, counter hateful narratives, and promote a future built on respect, equality, and dignity for all.

Please sign and share this petition widely. Together, we can challenge racism and build a more inclusive, equitable world.
