Demand Sony Stop Removing Paid Products from Digital Libraries and Keep Games Available
The Issue
I am an avid gamer and a proud owner of a PS4 Pro. Gaming has been my solace, my escape, and one of the few things that brought joy during some of the most challenging times in my life. My brother and I have spent countless hours playing games on our Sony systems, creating memories that helped us cope with the sudden loss of our father and the trauma we faced due to neglect from who was supposed to be our step-father. These games are not just entertainment; they are part of our healing process.
However, Sony's recent actions threaten to erase the chance to make new memories and further heal. They have begun removing paid products from customers' digital libraries due to changes in licensing agreements. This is not only unfair but also deeply distressing for users like me who rely on these games for more than just amusement.
Sony also has their systems and policies set up to not allow any games to be played on a new system unless the account that purchased them is the primary account. I have just received a new PS4 Pro system as a Christmas gift, and have countless hours of saved data and precious memories made during glimpses of hope in the dark void of the current chaos of my life. I am lost. My father and best friend is dead, my mother is in chaos just trying to remember everything, get paperwork taken care of, and get my brother to school everyday, all through her chronic illnesses, chronic fatigue, chronic memory issues, and chronic depression, I am working two jobs to help support my family and pay rent, the PS4 is my only way to spend time with my friends, and these games provide me with solace from my physically and mentally grueling jobs, over a decade of trauma from neglect and abuse at the hands of a terrible "step-father" and from bullying both in school because of my spinal deformity, and online because of my orientations and gender, my sensory processing disorder, and possible autism. These positive gaming memories and the ability to make more, are what give me hope during this dark time. I go to therapy, but these games are an even better therapy, they let me escape for a little bit, no matter how brief, and they allow me to talk to my friends and vent, cry, commiserate, laugh, sigh, and have good experiences. They allow me to chat about the mundane, the stressful, the funny, and the macabre, with people who understand me, not just from a psychological perspective, but from a personality and personal experience standpoint.
My friends have known me for years, and have played many of these games with me, and I would like to continue that for as long as possible. Unfortunately, since my brother wants to keep his current PS4 Pro as his primary, I am not allowed to access even my PS+ games that are in my library (only two of my games are accessable because I purchased them myself), unless I make my PS4 his primary, or repurchase all the games. They're around $20 each, and that would be way over a hundred dollars, and I don't have the money to replace them. I work two jobs, and I'm helping my mother to pay rent and buy cat food so my kittens don't starve, because she cashed out her 401K to pay for my father's sudden funeral. I can't afford dental work that I desperately need, or doctors visits for my spinal deformity that I was born with, and will even have to cancel my PS+ subscription and maybe even my therapy sessions really soon. Again, I don't have the money to buy these games, I can't make my PS4 the primary for my brother, because then he'll have issues with his system when he moves out on his own in less than two years, and all those games are sitting in my library, locked, just taunting me.
Sony should let a profile that has played these games on another system, take the games with them if they transfer systems, since they have save data for the games. This is not theft as Sony is trying to prevent, I legitimately have hours of game time on each game, this is extortion and theft of the user's money. If I have save data, they should be transferable. This is unfair to not only me and my family, but millions of users around the globe who may have purchased content taken way from them, or save data made useless because they cannot afford to repurchase the games already in their library.
Sony is one of the leading companies in the gaming industry, with millions of users worldwide trusting their products and services. It is unacceptable for them to disregard their customers' rights by taking away products they've rightfully paid for, or have save data and hours of game time for.
We urge Sony to reconsider this policy immediately and respect their consumers' rights by ensuring all purchased digital content remains accessible regardless of any changes in licensing agreements, as well as data from games that have clearly been played. Sony is a billion dollar company that does not need to steal from the poor and unfortunate to make ends meet. Sony is stealing from their paying customers, and excluding poor and unfortunate people from their customer demographic.
Help us protect our digital rights! Help us protect those who have already purchased or played games, and those who have come upon unfortunate circumstances and can no longer afford to access the games already in their library! Sign this petition today so we can send a clear message to Sony: We will not stand by while you take away what we've rightfully purchased or played!
