Demand Social Media Giants to Implement Stronger Measures Against Scammers
The Issue
My sister, like many others, fell victim to a scammer on Facebook. She lost her home and life savings due to a web of deceit spun by an individual who remains active on the platform, preying on other unsuspecting victims. This is not an isolated incident; I too have encountered numerous scammers and despite reporting them, Facebook has taken no action.
Social media giants such as Facebook have become safe havens for scammers who exploit their platforms with impunity. These companies have the resources and technology to block ISPs and implement stringent ID checks but choose not to do so. The most egregious among these is Facebook which does not even require users suspected of fraudulent activities to undergo an ID check.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers reported losing more than $3.3 billion in fraud losses in 2020 alone - up from $1.8 billion in 2019 (FTC Report, 2021). A significant chunk of these scams occur via social media platforms that fail in their responsibility towards user safety.
The time has come for us as users of these platforms, as victims or potential victims of scams, or simply as concerned individuals who believe in online safety and accountability - demand that social media companies take stronger measures against scammers.
We call upon you today - sign this petition urging social media giants like Facebook to implement stricter security measures including mandatory ID checks for suspicious accounts and proactive blocking of scammer rings' ISPs. Together we can make our online spaces safer!
