The Issue

On Saturday, Shane Gillis hosted “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) for the third time. In his opening monologue, he said he “didn’t know women just dress like whores now” at the gym, according to NBC News. The line appeared to fall flat with the studio audience, and hundreds of people criticized it online.

That joke would be troubling anywhere. On SNL, it also exposes a double standard. In 2019, SNL hired Gillis as a cast member and then quickly fired him after racist jokes from his podcast came to light. At the time, a spokesperson for executive producer Lorne Michaels called his language “offensive, hurtful and unacceptable,” according to NBC News. Since then, the show has invited him back to host three times: in 2024, 2025 and now 2026.

If offensive jokes about one group were serious enough to cost Gillis his cast job, jokes demeaning women should not earn him a third turn as host. A network’s standards should not depend on who the punchline is aimed at.

The timing made it worse. The episode aired while women across the country are sharing their own stories of campus sexual assault in support of a former Cornell University student known as Jane Doe. Critics, including actor Dan Levy, argued that staying silent about the objectification of women helps create a culture where sexual assault is treated as a debate instead of a crime.

Later that night, Gillis apologized for accidentally swearing during a sketch. As of NBC News’ report, there was no apology for the monologue, and SNL had not responded to requests for comment.

Lorne Michaels and NBC should apologize on air for the remarks and hold jokes that demean women to the same standard the show set in 2019, including when choosing future hosts.

Sign the petition to tell SNL that women deserve the same standard, before the next host takes the stage.
