Demand Shorter School Days for Improved Student Health and Performance
The Issue
I am a student, and every morning, I struggle to get out of bed, along with numerous other students, simply because school starts too early while days seem to stretch endlessly. The current length of the school day takes a toll on us, leaving us feeling exhausted and unable to focus on our tasks or fully engage with our studies due to insufficient rest. It is about time we request shorter school days, which will allow us to get the rest we need to optimize our mental and physical health, and ultimately, our academic performance.
Studies back up our struggle. Research indicates that adolescents who do not get enough sleep demonstrate lower levels of academic achievement and are at higher risk for a variety of health problems (Wheaton, Chapman, and Croft, 2016). According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, middle and high school students should start school at 8:30 AM or later to support their health, well-being, and learning.
This is our plea: Lower the number of hours in the school day, allowing us the much-needed rest to bolster our capacity to learn, concentrate, and de-stress.
