Demand School Cancellation in Montgomery County, MD During Severe Weather Conditions
The Issue
I am a concerned student of Montgomery County, MD who witnesses school children walking to school in harsh winter conditions. The cold weather, ice, and snow pose significant risks to their health and safety. It's heartbreaking to see these young students suffer as they trudge through the snow and icy conditions just to get an education.
Montgomery County is known for its harsh winters with temperatures often dropping below freezing point. According to the National Weather Service, our county has experienced an average of 15.2 inches of snowfall annually over the past decade (source: National Weather Service). Moreover, frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin when wind chill values are below -20°F (source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
These statistics clearly indicate that our children are being exposed to hazardous weather conditions on their way to school during winter months. This is not only detrimental for their physical health but also impacts their mental well-being and academic performance.
We urge the Montgomery County School Board to prioritize student safety by cancelling school during severe weather conditions such as extreme colds, heavy snowfall or icy roads. Let's ensure that our children's education does not come at the cost of their health or safety.
Please sign this petition if you believe in safeguarding our children from potentially dangerous winter commutes.
Spreading awareness is essential to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all students.
