Demand Scheer Apologize to Rachel Gilmore

Demand Scheer Apologize to Rachel Gilmore
The Issue
Canada has seen what happens when toxic rhetoric turns into real-world violence. The recent assassination of U.S. political figure Charlie Kirk, carried out by someone immersed in extremist views, is a tragic reminder of how words can lead to deadly outcomes.
In Canada, journalist Rachel Gilmore has faced ongoing harassment and death threats. These threats have been inflamed by Andrew Scheer, the current Leader of the Official Opposition, as well as rhetoric connected to Conservative figures like Anaida Poilievre. By targeting journalists, they have created a dangerous climate that undermines both press freedom and democratic safety.
The Leader of the Official Opposition has a duty to uphold democratic norms, not weaponize their platform against individuals. When that role is misused, it erodes trust, fuels extremism, and endangers lives.
We demand:
Andrew Scheer immediately resign as Leader of the Official Opposition in the House of Commons.
A formal public apology to Rachel Gilmore and all journalists harmed by his rhetoric.
The Conservative Party adopt and enforce a zero tolerance policy on harassment, threats, and language that incites violence.
Violent language breeds violent outcomes. If Canada wants to prevent tragedies like we’ve seen elsewhere, we must hold our leaders accountable now.
