The plight of Dalit Christians in India reflects a serious gap between the promises of the Constitution and the realities of their everyday lives. My motivation for this petition is rooted in the constitutional ideals of religious freedom, social justice, and equal rights. However, I believe that the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, undermines these ideals. By restricting Scheduled Caste status based on religion, this order continues systemic discrimination against Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims.

Imagine growing up in a society where opportunities and government support systems are denied because of your religious faith. This is the reality faced by many Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims today. The existing law neglects Dalit communities who have embraced Christianity or Islam. This exclusion not only makes them more vulnerable but also perpetuates a cycle of injustice. Such discrimination is contrary to the spirit of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees every individual the freedom to profess, practice, and propagate their religion. Yet, the continuing prejudice and discrimination against Dalit Christians hinder their right to equality and social justice. Although Articles 14 and 21 guarantee equality before the law, protection of life, and personal liberty, Dalit Christians are unable to fully enjoy these constitutional rights.

Official reports and studies reveal alarming inequalities. In areas such as education and employment, Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims remain more disadvantaged compared to their Hindu Dalit counterparts. This disparity is further aggravated by their continued exclusion from reservations and other affirmative action measures designed to uplift marginalised communities. As a result, an artificial hierarchy has been created within the Scheduled Castes, which should not exist in a democratic and secular society.

Our demand is simple, yet deeply significant. The discriminatory Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, must be repealed. Such a step would acknowledge India's multi-religious character and extend equal constitutional rights to Dalit Christians. It would recognise their unique identity, their struggles, and the historical injustices they continue to face.

Repealing this discriminatory provision would help create a society where opportunities are distributed equally and not determined by an individual's religion. Therefore, we urge lawmakers to amend this outdated legal provision in accordance with the principles of equality and religious freedom envisioned by the founders of our nation.

Supporting this cause means standing for a just society that respects diversity and values every citizen equally. By ending the discrimination faced by Dalit Christians, India can move closer to becoming a more inclusive, equitable, and democratic nation.

Through this petition, we urge the Government of India to take immediate action. The government must reaffirm its commitment to protecting the dignity, rights, and freedoms of every citizen, regardless of their religious affiliation.
