At Virginia Tech, access to free menstrual products is vital for the health and dignity of all menstruating students. Currently, PERIOD@VT has successfully installed free period product dispensers across various academic and dormitory buildings on campus. However, there is a critical oversight in the current system: the dispensers  are not included in the custodian contracts responsible for refilling them.

The availability of free menstrual products is not just a matter of convenience but a necessity that ensures no student has their education disrupted because they lack access to essential hygiene products. These dispensaries not only support students in managing their menstrual health with dignity but also contribute to gender equality and the overall well-being of the student community. 

Moreover, according to a study by the Free the Tampon Foundation, 86% of women reported starting their period unexpectedly in public without the supplies they need. This statistic underscores the pressing need for on-hand access to menstrual products everywhere on campus, especially academic settings where students spend a majority of their time.

To address this issue, the university administration must take steps to incorporate the refilling of all on-campus dispensers into the custodial contracts. By doing so, they would demonstrate their commitment to student welfare and inclusivity.
