The Issue

Before a regional college tennis tournament, the University of Maryland (UMD) club tennis team shared a document with other schools. It contained an altered Maryland state flag covered in Ku Klux Klan hoods. Howard University, a historically Black university just down the road in Washington, D.C., was one of the schools that got it.

Toni Rachal, president of Howard’s club team, found the image and called for “meaningful accountability,” according to WUSA9. UMD President Darryll J. Pines has said the graphic held racist imagery aimed at Black people. The club is suspended. The university’s student conduct office, campus police, and civil rights office have all opened investigations.

A suspension is a start, but it is not accountability. When investigations end quietly behind closed doors, Black students are left guessing whether anything changed.

Black Student Union leaders say the graphic fits a pattern. “This is definitely not an isolated incident,” union president Bryant Reed told the Guardian. Union leaders say their concerns have been brushed aside before, and that the group has no formal line to the administration.

President Pines and UMD leadership can act now. They should release the findings of all three investigations, formally apologize to Howard University and every school that received the material, and give the Black Student Union a standing seat with senior administrators so problems get heard before they reach this point.

Black students at UMD deserve more than a statement. Sign the petition to demand UMD make these findings public and make real changes before the next incident happens.
