Andy Betterton, the current Mayor in Florence, AL recently put the Director of Animal Services on Administrative Leave due to a transport of animals to a Rescue to save their lives. Anyone that is familiar with the Director of Animal Services, knows what a wonderful job she has done and continues to do for the betterment of our animals in our community. Mayor Betterton stated that it was against the Vehicle Use Policy. The policy states that City vehicles can only be used pertaining to departmental business purposes. We question how saving animals is not pertaining to the Animal Services Department?  Transports have been ongoing for over 12 years, which is well before the current Mayor and before the current Director of Animal Services were in their respective positions. So that leaves us to question, Why now? Did the Mayor not know it was happening? If so, we have to question his competency! In 2024, over 1,000 dogs and cats caught their freedom rides specifically due to amazing Rescue Transports! Without Rescue transports, the only other option is Euthanasia. Why would anyone choose Euthanasia over rescue?! Well, our local Mayor, although not directly stating, IS choosing Euthanasia if rescue transports is banned!
