The Issue

Thousands of passengers, myself included, have suffered from significant flight delays while travelling with chartered airlines, such as Maleth Aero, through package holidays booked with companies like P&O Cruises. These delays have caused frustration, inconvenience, and financial loss, as passengers are entitled to compensation under UK Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004. However, chartered airlines are failing to compensate affected passengers, and travel companies are refusing to step in, leaving holidaymakers without the compensation they are legally owed.

What is at stake?

If nothing changes, thousands of passengers will continue to be denied their rightful compensation, eroding trust in travel companies and the package holiday system. Travel companies are shirking their responsibilities by shifting the blame onto the airlines they partner with, even though they are legally bound by the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 to ensure the quality of all services provided in the package, including flights. Without accountability, passengers are left in legal battles, with little chance of recourse, creating an unfair and burdensome system for consumers.

Why is now the time to act?

This issue cannot be ignored any longer. Travel companies, like P&O Cruises, must take responsibility for ensuring compensation when their airline partners fail to meet legal obligations. Additionally, the UK Government needs to amend or introduce new legislation to make consumer rights protections more robust, enforcing mandatory compensation payouts by travel companies when chartered airlines fail. We need action now to protect future travellers, restore trust in package holidays, and create fairer, stronger regulations for consumer protection.
