The Issue

It's April 2007. You're laying in a puddle of your own blood. You've been stabbed over 100 times. Your ears have been cut off. Your lips have been cut off. You're clinging to life and see a tall man is walking towards you with black and red jumper cables that he clips to your ears. You black out from the pain.

This is the stomach-churning true story of what Michael Vick did to HUNDREDS of his dogs over a series of several years. This is sociopathic behavior that was allowed to continue because of his celebrity status and money. If he did this to humans, he and all of his accomplices would be labeled as serial killers and sentenced to death... a much more humane sentence than what he did to every animal that entered his compound.

It's now December 2024 and Norfolk State University has decided to hire this individual as their head football coach. If you've ever played sports before or you know someone who has, you know that the coaching roll comes with responsibilities on the field as well as off the field. Players often refer to their coach as a mentor, a parent, a motivator, someone who "keeps your head on straight" and provides guidance, etc. etc. Players often put their coaches on a figurative pedestal.

Many people say, "Vick has served his time" and "That's the past. Move on." While he did serve time, I think the majority of folks agree that the time he served was morally minimal but what was sentenced due to outdated animal welfare laws. We know there is a strong connection between animal cruelty and sociopathy but our system of rules and regulations has not caught up.

This is not an individual that I want any young person to put on their pedestal. This is not an individual that I want anyone to take advice from. This is not an individual that I want back in the spotlight. The heinousness of his crimes and what he allowed to go on should not be forgotten or minimized because he was caught 17 years ago. Michael Vick is someone who is not sorry about the crimes he committed. He's only sorry that he got caught.

Your signature on this petition sends a message to not only Norfolk State, but also to the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference and the media outlets that report on those teams. Your signature says that you don't want to idolize a killer and sociopath. Your signature says that you see through Michael Vick's "changed man" façade.
