A Democratic Mandate Clearly Expressed
This petition was initiated specifically for the voters of Markham–Unionville, where 27,000 citizens entrusted their democratic mandate to their elected representative. The intent was clear: to ask for accountability, transparency, and respect for the will of constituents following a fundamental change in political representation.
As of today, within 28 hours which is less than two days, this petition has received approximately 36,860 signatures.
We acknowledge that not every supporter is a registered voter from Markham–Unionville. Some signatures may fall outside the original geographic scope, and this petition does not claim otherwise. However, this fact does not weaken the outcome — it strengthens it.
The number itself is significant. Even after accounting for minor discrepancies, the total far exceeds the number of voters who originally conferred the mandate in this riding. More importantly, the additional support reflects something larger than a single constituency: it demonstrates that Canadians across the country recognize this issue as a systemic democratic concern, not a partisan grievance.
What began as a local call for accountability has resonated nationally. Canadians from all backgrounds and political perspectives have added their voices, not to interfere in a riding they do not live in, but to express a shared belief that voters — not politicians alone — should have the final say when representation fundamentally changes.
This petition therefore stands as a success on two levels:
For Markham–Unionville, it clearly shows that the electorate expects an explanation and a renewed mandate when their vote is effectively altered.
For Canada, it exposes a structural gap in our parliamentary system and underscores the need for serious discussion on reforming floor-crossing rules to protect democratic integrity.
This is not a verdict — it is a mandate to respond.
The voices have been counted.
The concern is unmistakable.
And the expectation is clear.
Democracy does not end on election night. It demands accountability!
We, as Canadians who care deeply about our country and its democratic principles, call on MP Michael Ma to step down and formally tender his resignation immediately.
