The number antisemitic incidents in Canada have increased dramatically since October 7th. McMaster University is sanctioning Jewish students and staff while condoning an antisemitic faculty member, Ghada Sasa, who organized the antisemitic protests in Toronto that targeted the Miles Nadal JCC, Jewish MPs, and the owners and patrons of Cafe Landwer and Aroma. With thousands of followers on Twitter, Ghada Sasa also claims that Israel, not Hamas, killed Israeli festival-goers on October 7th.

A double standard exists. McMaster is sanctioning Jews while condoning incitement of antisemitism by McMaster staff. We must act!

How is McMaster sanctioning Jews?

On November 5th, McMaster announced an investigation of Eva Lonn, a medical director of cardiac health and rehabilitation at McMaster University, and professor of medicine in the university’s medical school. The previous weekend, Dr. Lonn posted a comment on a New York Post article about a pro-Palestinian protest in Brooklyn, N.Y. in which she said, “deport them all to where they came from.” Dr. Lonn has since apologised and redacted her comments, but she is being investigated by the university regardless, and the investigation has led to her demonization by multiple media outlets.

How is McMaster condoning antisemitism?

On the other hand, McMaster University has not denounced the ghastly antisemitic vitriol being spewed by McMaster PhD student and TA Ghada Sasa, who in interviews claims that Israel, not Hamas, killed the festival-goers on October 7th. As a Board Member at CJPME (an organization B'nai Brith Canada has accused of propagating antisemitism, and where two weeks ago Ghada Sasa was removed from her Board role for being too extreme), Ghada Sasa organized and continues to promote antisemitic marches that have targeted the Miles Nadal JCC and harassed the owners and patrons of multiple Jewish-owned business in downtown Toronto every week since October 7th, including Cafe Landwer and Aroma. Ghada Sasa's tirades of hate speech, calls for uprising and civil unrest, and antisemitic tropes have continued non-stop on her @sasa_gada Twitter account since October 7th. Ghada Sasa and her thousands of social media followers have also targeted and threatened another Jewish McMaster doctor on Twitter because he strongly denounced her world view. Her followers have subsequently named him, posted his picture, and are asking others to share his home address. This is incitement, targeting, and a hate crime.

Ghada Sasa's long history of antisemitism

Ghada Sasa's history of antisemitism, demonization of jews and incitement of hate has gone on for years; in 2017 York University published her trope-filled research paper titled “Israel: Greenwashing Colonialism and Apartheid” in which she claims Israel’s creation of nature reserves is a form of colonialism, capitalism, and apartheid, and that Israel must be dismantled in order to safeguard human and environmental interests. 

What must happen

It is incomprehensible that McMaster is targeting Dr. Lonn with an investigation and has yet to denounce Ghada Sasa. Individuals who propagate hate, cheer the ghastly cruelties committed by Hamas, and promote violence against jews must be denounced and held accountable. Ghada Sasa’s extreme antisemitism, her organizing of hate rallies, harassment of Jewish doctors, and denial of the October 7th Hamas atrocities are directly contributing to the waves of antisemitism and increasing threats of violence targeting Jews in Canada and beyond. 

Paul Kessler, an innocent Jewish man was killed in Los Angeles on November 6th by a Palestinian protestor incited by vicious antisemites exactly like Ghada Sasa.

A Montreal Synagogue was firebombed on November 6th, also incited by muslim extremist calls-to arms that are eerily similar to messages posted on social media by Ghada Sasa.

To stop antisemitism and violence against Jews here in Canada, and to prevent more firebombings and atrocities like the murder of Paul Kessler, McMaster University must immediately hold Ghada Sasa accountable for her antisemitism, propagation of lies, and incitement of hatred and violence against Jews.

Enough is enough. Never again.

It is time for McMaster University to take decisive action against Ghada Sasa for her reprehensible behaviour. Ghada Sasa and the university must be held accountable.
