I am writing this petition out of a deep sense of frustration and concern. Time and time again, I have seen abusers, those who inflict unimaginable harm on others, escape with minimal consequences. It is disheartening to witness individuals causing profound damage to victims of abuse, domestic abuse, and violence against women, yet they often receive only a sliver of justice in the form of reduced prison sentences. This is not just a personal grievance but a societal issue that affects us all.

Statistics reveal the troubling reality: according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in three women have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. Yet, the judicial outcomes often fail these survivors, offering mere symbolic justice, with average sentences significantly shorter than warranted by the severity of these crimes. For example, a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that offenders in domestic violence cases served an average of only six months in jail.

These lenient sentences do not reflect the lifelong trauma inflicted on victims, nor do they serve as adequate deterrents for potential offenders. The ramifications go beyond individual cases—they perpetuate a culture of impunity, sending a dangerous message to society that such behavior is tolerable or even excusable.

We must advocate for change. Increasing the minimum sentencing guidelines for these egregious acts will demonstrate our collective intolerance for violence against women and our commitment to protecting victims. This can be achieved through legislative reform that enforces stricter penalties, ensuring sentences are proportionate to the harm caused. Countries like Australia have already begun implementing tougher sentencing guidelines for domestic violence, with significant improvements in victim safety and offender accountability.
