Demand Justifiable Tax Rates and Adequate Facilities in India
The Issue
I am an average citizen of India trying, like so many of us, to save enough money to own a home. However, due to the high taxation in this country, my attempts have been in vain. It's challenging enough to make ends meet without the troubling specter of excessive taxation looming on our back. Aside from the personal burden that these taxes impose, there is a profound sense of unfairness when we look around.
India is one of the top countries globally in terms of tax rates, with effective tax rates that can reach up to 35.88% which makes saving money for a house or even basic necessities an uphill battle (SeedInvest, 2021). Yet, the standard of public facilities that our tax money is supposed to fund is far from satisfactory.
Despite being one of the highest tax-paying countries, India ranks poorly in public services and infrastructural development, sitting at rank 131 out of 189 countries in the 2020 Human Development Index (UNDP, 2020). This discord between high taxes and low public services is deeply problematic and, in some ways, unjustifiable.
If you are, like me, burdened by high taxes and unfulfilled by the return in terms of public facilities, it's time to raise our voices. Let's demand a reduction in taxes or a visible, marked increase in public facilities. It's time for change; a fiscally just system where taxation corresponds to the level of public services we receive. Let justice prevail. Sign this petition.
