The Issue

Growing up in Nepal, I witnessed firsthand the hopes and struggles of everyday people striving for a better future. The recent violence against student protesters hits me deeply because these young people are my peers—friends, neighbors, and members of the community I once called home. Having lived there, I understand the fragility of the democratic progress Nepal has made and how quickly it can be undone by such acts of brutality.

On September 8, 2025, a dark cloud loomed over the streets of Nepal as peaceful student demonstrations turned tragic. Police forces opened fire on these students, including minors still in school uniforms, leading to the confirmed deaths of at least 19 young lives and injuring countless others. These were no mere accidents; they represent a severe moral failing and a violation of Nepal's international obligations.

These acts infringe upon the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), specifically Articles 6, 19, and 37(a), as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966), Articles 6(1) and 2. The international community must shine a light on this grievous human rights crisis and hold accountable those responsible for these egregious actions.

Nepal's democratic potential is precious, yet fragile. Violent actions like these hammer away at the foundations of a free and just society. We cannot let these guardians of the law become violators of its most sacred principles. Immediate, transparent investigations must be initiated, and those responsible must face justice, ensuring such a tragedy is never repeated.

Join me in calling for Nepal's authorities to uphold their international human rights commitments and protect their citizens from excessive and unjustified state violence. Stand in solidarity with the families who have lost their loved ones, and help ensure that international pressure is applied to bring about justice and a safer future for all Nepali citizens.

Please sign this petition to demand justice for Nepal's victims and to prevent future tragedies.
