The Issue

In our town, there's a pervasive issue affecting around 7,000 vacant lot owners who are unjustly denied the right to utilize their own land. This long-standing problem stems from false platting, where utility infrastructure was promised but never delivered. Owners pay taxes annually on land they are prohibited from using even though the original intent of the zoning created was to have utility infrastructure in place, which never happened.

I have witnessed our town's economy suffering when shops shut their doors due to the lack of foot traffic, and vacant lots have become a dumping ground for garbage, covered in dirt and tumbleweeds.

Decades ago, investors promised infrastructure to these lands—a promise the county approved and now conveniently disregards. Owners are now expected to shoulder the cost of infrastructure improvements, reaching hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. This is not only unreasonable but a blatant disregard for the commitments made by the county and the investors of the past.

Our community cannot thrive under these conditions. Businesses are closing, and there's an overarching economic despair because of these unusable lots. These lands were meant to be developed, providing homes, businesses, and recreational areas that could have transformed our town into a vibrant, thriving community. Instead, we're left with vacant fields and a constant reminder of unfulfilled promises.

We demand action from the county to rectify this situation. They must acknowledge their role in approving false promises and take proactive steps to either find a way to install the necessary infrastructure or change the zoning to allow a more rural way of living with alternative utilities. This action would not only fulfill a moral obligation but would catalyze economic growth and community wellbeing. With proper infrastructure or the zoning change needed, we can create opportunities, encourage new businesses, and improve the quality of life for everyone in our community.

Please join me in urging our local government to address the grievances of vacant land owners. This has gone on too long. It's time for the county to correct their mistakes and help our town realize its potential. Sign this petition to demand justice and development for all affected property owners.
