We, the undersigned, call upon the Columbiana County Humane Society to release the investigative file on the abuse, neglect, and starvation of horses at the Pure Gold facility in Salem, Ohio to the Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office for full review and potential criminal charges.

Under Ohio law, the Humane Society holds the investigative file—but it has the authority to turn that file over to prosecutors when justice demands it. Today, justice demands it.

This tragedy is not new. The Columbiana County Humane Society Board failed to act decisively in 2022–2023, allowing the suffering of these horses to continue. The community will not accept silence or inaction any longer.

We are urging:

The Columbiana County Humane Society to immediately release the complete investigative  to the Prosecutor’s Office so that a full criminal review and investigation may begin.

The Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office to open a transparent and comprehensive investigation into all reports of animal abuse and neglect related to the Pure Gold facility.

Collaboration with qualified equine professionals and veterinarians to assess the full extent of neglect, suffering, and potential violations of Ohio’s animal cruelty statutes.

Accountability for all individuals whose actions—or failures to act—allowed this suffering to occur.
The equestrian community, animal advocates, and citizens of Columbiana County stand united in grief and outrage. We are demanding action, not excuses.

Animal cruelty and neglect have no place in Columbiana County. We are calling for transparency, justice, and change.
