The Issue

This story shows us how gravely justice is failing in Ireland. Natasha O'Brien, an innocent woman, was beaten unconscious by Cathal Crotty, a soldier in the Irish army. Her only 'crime' was attempting to stop Crotty from spewing homophobic hate speech in a public setting. Despite her bravery, she is now jobless and suffering from trauma caused by this harrowing event.

In stark contrast, Crotty, who only confessed to his brutal actions when confronted with CCTV footage, received a meagre 3-year suspended sentence. The judge's decision hinged on his worry about the sentence’s impact on Crotty's military career. This ruling privileges a perpetrator's job prospect over a survivor's life. In prioritising this, the court is essentially condoning such violent actions and failing to deter individuals like Crotty from harming women and children.

Ireland's justice system has failed Natasha O'Brien and it's time they rectify this by dismissing Crotty from his role. This case illustrates an unnerving trend of prioritising the offender's well-being over the survivors' needs, blatantly negating the pain and suffering they endure. Stand with me against this ongoing inequity and urge the courts to take necessary action against such perpetrators. Let's demand that Ireland's justice system takes a stronger stand against such violence and uplifts the survivors instead of perpetuating their torment.

Crotty's violent behavior is utterly incompatible with the standards and responsibilities expected of a member of the armed forces. An individual who exhibits such a lack of control and engages in unwarranted violence should not be entrusted with access to weapons or be provided with the training that the army offers.

The safety and integrity of the Irish Army, as well as the broader community, are at risk if individuals like Cathal Crotty are allowed to remain within its ranks. We believe that his continued presence in the army undermines the trust and safety of both his fellow soldiers and the citizens he is meant to protect.

Therefore, please sign this petition to demand justice for Natasha O'Brien and dismissal for Cathal Crotty so that the appropriate action can be taken to ensure Cathal Crotty is dismissed from his duties immediately and permanently.
