On November 17, 2025, the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Curt Douglas Andersen has been charged with Voluntary Manslaughter, a Level 2 felony, for the killing of Maria Florinda Ríos Pérez de Velásquez. He was booked into the Boone County Jail and later released on a $25,000 bond.

While the charge does not bring Maria back, it is still an important step toward accountability. For the first time since Maria was killed, the legal system has formally recognized that her death was not justified under Indiana law — and that this case deserves to be heard in a courtroom.
