The Issue

On May 13, 2025, a deeply troubling incident occurred in Welland, Ontario. While several community members were reportedly attempting to help a raccoon in distress—by contacting local wildlife rescues and volunteers—another individual intervened and ended the animal’s life using a shovel.

This act, if accurately reported, may violate Ontario’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, which prohibits the harming or killing of wildlife without proper cause or authorization. Beyond the legal concerns, this incident has raised serious questions about the humane treatment of animals in our community.

We are calling on local authorities in Welland to investigate this matter thoroughly and to take legal action if it is determined that the law was broken. We also urge Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to reinforce public education about humane and lawful responses to wildlife encounters.

Every animal deserves compassion. Holding individuals accountable for acts of cruelty—when confirmed through due process—sends a powerful message that violence toward wildlife will not be tolerated.

Sign this petition to demand a full investigation and, if appropriate, legal consequences for those involved. Let’s stand together to protect the vulnerable creatures we share our communities with.
