Demand Justice for Cooper Tenants: Refund Rent & End Leases

Demand Justice for Cooper Tenants: Refund Rent & End Leases
The Issue
On June 23, 2025, a six-alarm blaze tore through The Cooper Apartments in Fort Worth, displacing over 800 residents. Many remain unable to enter their homes, yet they're still being charged full rent, forcing them to pay for unlivable units. We demand The Cooper Apartments management waive lease termination penalties and issue pro‑rated rent refunds for all residents for the month of June.
Why it matters:
- While some areas of the complex may still be physically standing, ongoing health and safety concerns, including water damage, poor air quality, unstable infrastructure, and restricted access, make it unreasonable for residents to return or remain under lease.
- Residents have had limited or no access to their homes and belongings for days.
- It’s unjust to charge full rent when tenants are displaced through no fault of their own.
- The Cooper Apartments has an opportunity to do right by its tenants and uphold its responsibility to the Fort Worth community.
We, the undersigned, demand The Cooper Apartments:
• Pro‑rate and refund rent for June 2025.
• Refund all deposits (e.g. Security, Pet, etc.) to all residents
• Publicly communicate promptly with tenants about next steps.

Update 6/27/25: Lease Release Approved, But We’re Not Done Yet
We’ve just received confirmation that The Cooper Apartments will allow all residents to be released from their leases without penalty. This is a major step forward, and it wouldn’t have happened without your voices. 🙌
But we’re not done yet.
Despite this progress, many residents are still being charged full rent for June, even though they’re were unable to safely access or live in their units. In addition, security and pet deposits have not yet been addressed.
We are continuing to ask The Cooper Apartments to:
- Pro-rate June rent for all displaced residents
- Refund all security and pet deposits in full
Please keep sharing this petition to maintain the pressure. Every signature strengthens our call for accountability and fairness.
