Demand International Intervention for Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

The Issue

We are a group of four sixth form students from Headington Rye in Oxford, striving for global equality and advocating for women's rights worldwide. As students in an all-girls school, we feel an urgent responsibility to address the absence of freedom and autonomy for women, especially in regions where such basic human rights are aggressively suppressed. In recent times, Afghanistan has become an unfortunate region; the dire situation of women’s rights in Afghanistan under the crushing rule of the Taliban is alarming. For the past three decades, Afghan women and girls have endured violations at the hands of militant groups, facing stringent bans on education, employment, free speech, and participation in public life, thereby restricting their self-sufficiency and basic human rights. These prohibitions are threatening to rob an entire generation of their potential, talent, and capabilities. It is shocking to learn that when these courageous women attempt to protest against their oppressive situation peacefully, they face severe consequences including harassment, arrest, torture, and even death. Such atrocities evoke worldwide indignation and demand immediate attention. It is deeply distressing that in 2024, the fight for women's rights in Afghanistan seems to have regressed compared to the rest of the world. We urge international organisations and governments worldwide to intervene and enforce safeguards for the protection of women’s rights in Afghanistan. Now more than ever, Afghanistan's women need a global community that stands united for their rights, their safety, and their future. Please stand with us and sign this petition to bring attention to the oppression of women in Afghanistan and demand immediate international intervention.
