Demand inclusive support for LGBTQIA+ students in Religious schools
The issue
I’ve seen too many of my friends, who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, struggle in a school environment that should embrace them but instead alienates them. These are schools that preach love and acceptance from their pulpits but often fail to practice them when it comes to LGBTQIA+ students. As a close friend to many brave individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, I am compelled to act and seek support for a vulnerable segment of the student body who need it now more than ever.
Catholic schools are significant educational institutions that reach countless young minds every day. In the United States alone, close to two million students attend such schools, many of whom are either part of the LGBTQIA+ community or have friends and family who are. These students face unique challenges that are compounded by a lack of institutional support and clear policies safeguarding their well-being.
Studies have illustrated that a supportive school environment can dramatically reduce dropout rates and improve mental health outcomes for LGBTQIA+ students, potentially lowering rates of depression and suicide. A report from the Trevor Project found that LGBTQIA+ youth in supportive environments are 30% less likely to attempt suicide compared to those in unsupportive settings. Yet, too often, these students in Catholic schools encounter hostility or neglect that hinders their ability to learn and grow alongside their peers.
These schools have a tremendous opportunity to lead by example by publicly affirming their commitment to all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. By implementing inclusive policies, providing comprehensive training for teachers and staff on LGBTQIA+ issues, and establishing clear non-discrimination policies, these schools can become safe havens rather than sites of fear and discrimination.
We are calling for a change—one that aligns Catholic education with its fundamental principles of love and compassion. We demand immediate action from the administration of Catholic schools to form advisory councils inclusive of LGBTQIA+ students and allies, introduce anti-bullying campaigns that specifically address homophobia and transphobia, and facilities that are sensitive to the needs of all gender identities.
Join me in this crucial movement to support our friends, our siblings, our classmates. By signing this petition, you help urge Catholic school leaders to create an environment where every student can thrive without fear of judgment, where love truly knows no bounds. Please sign and share this petition to make authentic acceptance a reality in our Catholic schools.
