Demand Improved Roadside Rest Facilities for HGV Drivers

The Issue

I am a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver, and like many others across the country, I face daily challenges due to inadequate roadside rest facilities. Our safety and that of others around us are compromised by this

HGV drivers play a crucial role in our economy, transporting goods over long distances. However, the lack of proper rest facilities puts us at risk of fatigue-related accidents. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), about 40% of sleep-related accidents involve commercial vehicles.Legislation binds us to safety standards governed by Tacho law however with more vehicles of every kind on Britain’s roads today it is increasingly more difficult and dangerous for us to safely take our 45 minute breaks which we are entitled to.Truckstops are usually far and few between and not every HGV driver delivers solely by use of motorway.Smart motorways have increased the number of slow moving vehicles by constantly changing the legal limits through journeys, therefore halting the lorry drivers from successfully making it to the safest stopping place which would usually be a service station. In towns the most frustrating circumstances are for HGV drivers being that Britains roads were not really designed for HGVs and many roads are not permitted for use of lorry’s,this can result in the driver receiving a heavy fine if he has no other option than to use or park in this road for compliance with tacho law.We are asking this time for the Government to take serious note of this issue and will expect them to hold an official parliamentary enquiry into such thus proving their commitment to public health and safety. Please support the cause driver or not we need a show of hands in favour of these demands so finally the powers that be will listen and take action!

We need our government to take immediate action in improving these facilities. Enhanced roadside rest areas with adequate amenities will not only ensure our wellbeing but also contribute towards reducing road accidents caused by driver fatigue.

Please join me in urging the government to prioritize this issue and invest in better roadside rest facilities for HGV drivers nationwide. Your signature can make a difference in improving conditions for those who keep our supply chains moving. Sign this petition today!
